Some important bugfixes:

fixed sorting with layers - was upside down!
fixed sorting with layers + protect vertical
waterline fixed a bit and support for layers added(basically a pocket operation for full silhouette or bounding rectangle on layers thresholds)

A Bodhi Linux 2 0 0 FAQ

Ive been getting a good deal of redundant questions regarding Bodhis upcoming 2.0.0 release. Today I would like to address a few of the more common questions Ive been getting.

When is the release date?

No idea. I live strictly by "its ready when its ready" philosophy for the software I work on. Setting strict release dates causes buggy software to be marked as "stable". Our targeted release month is July - but who knows it could be ready before then.

What is the main difference between 2.0.0 and 1.x.y?

The Ubuntu base is the main difference. Our 1.x.y series is based on Ubuntu 10.04, while 2.0.0 is built on top of 12.04

Can I upgrade my Bodhi Linux 1.x.y install to Bodhi 2.0.0?

No. A full reinstall will be required.

Will there be 64bit support?

Yep.

What are the minimum system requirements?

The minimum system requirements will be about the same as Bodhi 1.x.y. Currently they are looking like:

300mhz processor

128mb RAM

2gig of hard drive space

Will it be faster than Bodhi 1.x.y?

Could be. It will not be slower to say the least.

How big will the disc download be?

Since we do not have a final stable version as of yet I cannot say for sure. Expect it to be under 500mb though.

Can I upgrade from 2.0.0 pre-release to the final 2.0.0 version?

Yep.

A little more on the Poodle IBM Domino 9 0 1 and the Poodle Vulnerability

In my last post, I discussed the steps required to get your Domino 9.0.1 server patched against the poodle bug which exists in both SSL 3.0 and TLS. At the end of the post, I mentioned that I still had one server which was refusing to apply the patch.

This is how I got around the problem.

The Server that Wouldnt
After taking the patches all the way back to Fix Pack 1 and slowly patching forward one-by-one with reboots in between, I realised that whatever was affecting my server had been installed for a long time.

There was no easy way to resolve the problem and obviously I couldnt roll back forever. I just had to accept the fact that the server would not take the patch and take some more drastic measures.

Backup First
Of course, before taking any drastic measures, you should always backup first. Personally, I like to have a proper backup as well as a local copy of the main domino files. That way I dont have to worry about streaming and tapes.

I manually took a copy of the D:LotusDomino folder on the server (but not sub-folders) and saved it elsewhere. Then, being careful to overwrite only obvious program and library files, EXE, DLL plus any other non-data files, I copied the files from a server which was otherwise at the same level (64 bit Domino 9.0.1) but had been successfully patched.

After the copy, I restarted the server and retested for the poodle problem. Luckily, the file-copy procedure had resolved it.

Yet again, Im thankful for the low tech nature of domino and the fact that it doesnt go crazy with registry entries.

What if I dont have a working Server?
So, if you dont have a working poodle-proof server and youre faced with a similar issue to mine, then one of the simplest options is to install a brand new Domino 9.0.1 server and patch it, then try copying the files across. Theres a pretty good chance that it will do the job.

A Bodhi Linux 2 0 0 Beginning

The Bodhi team and I are happy to announce the first pre-release (Read: Not suitable for daily usage machines) of our next major release Bodhi Linux 2.0.0! This release is considered alpha quality and is intended to allow our community to help test this release before it becomes our "stable" version.

The goal of a new major release is not to introduce ground breaking new features. The goal of a major Bodhi release is to allow our distro to transition to the next major Ubuntu LTS as a distro base. That is right folks - these ISO images are built on top of the recently released Ubuntu 12.04 (where is all previous Bodhi versions had been based on Ubuntu 10.04). The most noteworthy thing this release introduces is native support for 64bit. From this point forward all Bodhi releases will come in x86 and 64bit flavors.

Things to note with these CD images:

Not everything is going to work - we know this and so should you. The important thing is that when you find something that doesnt work let us know so we can fix it! The best solution for discussing issues you find is our user forums (not the comments section on this post).

I had a minor brain fart when building the latest set of packages for this image - which means when you select Bodhi Linux->About from the main menu, the version number still appears as "1.4.0", this numbering issue will be resolved within the next week via package manager updates.

The download size is large. Yep - there is nothing wrong with your eyes, those ISO images are kinda fat compared to previous Bodhi releases. This is because I have yet to start manually stripping out packages from the disc that arent needed. That will be happening between now and the stable release (if youd like to help with this, please feel free to post lists of pre-installed packages you notice that arent needed).

The installer slides on the 32bit image have a permissions issue that prevents them from being displayed by the installer by default.

The network manager is not auto launching for the live user - it can be launched manually.

Network manager needs to be run with sudo to add connections - for a fix to this see here.

I will update this list with known issues as they are found/reported.

A linguagem do computador explicada em 0 e 1

Depois de um tempo sem postar nada aqui no blog (correria na universidade), estou de volta, e hoje vou falar de um tema que muita gente tem curiosidade, que � a linguagem que qualquer sistema digital usa, inclusive o computador, denominada esta de Linguagem Bin�ria.

Como toda linguagem, a linguagem bin�ria � utilizada para se entender aqueles que tamb�m falam em bin�rio, por exemplo: os dispositivos de um computador, e qualquer sistema digital. Esta possui uma esp�cie de alfabeto, por�m este � formado apenas por dois n�meros, o 0 e o 1.

Nos prim�rdios da eletr�nica estes n�meros foram escolhidos apenas para representar dois estados em um fio, associaram da seguinte forma:

0: para quando n�o se passava nenhuma energia no fio.

1: para quando tinha-se energia passando pelo fio.

Com a inven��o e a revolu��o do transistor por volta de 1950, foi poss�vel manipular o estado de outros fios, ou seja ligando ou desligando (0 ou 1).

E a medida que o tempo se passava a complexidade desses sistemas que controlavam logicamente a energia em um conjunto de fios foi se expandindo cada vez mais chegando a um n�vel l�gico em que era poss�vel se fazer e controlar praticamente qualquer coisa.

O tamanho desses transistores tamb�m foi diminuindo absurdamente com o tempo, no qual hoje chegam a caber cerca de 20 milh�es de transistores num pingo de uma letra "i" deste texto.

Mas voltando ao bin�rio, temos somente o 0 e 1 presentes na linguagem, mas e ent�o como o computador entende a letra "A" e o numero "3" por exemplo, se ele s� entende 0 e 1??

Ora o que o computador faz, � agrupar v�rios 0 e 1 para formar uma c�digo que represente o "A" 01000001 e "3" 00000011.

Os n�meros bin�rios, j� que bi = 2, s�o n�meros de base 2 (0 e 1), diferente da base que usamos desde crian�a, que � a base 10 (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 e 9). Existem outras bases tamb�m, por�m vamos nos deter aqui somente ao bin�rio.

Usando como exemplo acima podemos transformar facilmente um numero da base decimal na base bin�ria e vice e versa.vejamos:

- Convers�o de Bin�rio para Decimal:

Basta substituir os 1 por 2 e elevar � pot�ncias crescentes da direita para a esquerda.

2�+0�+0�+2�= 9

- Convers�o de Decimal para Bin�rio:

Basta pegar um numero qualquer e sair dividindo por 2 e ir guardando os restos das divis�es, sendo que o primeiro resto fica mais a direita.

6/2=3, resta 0

3/2=1, resta 1

1/2=0, resta 1

6 = 110

Compreendendo tudo o que foi dito acima podemos ter uma ideia b�sica e enxuta de como funcionam os dispositivos digitais que convivemos atualmente, por exemplo um MP3 player:

Quando apertamos o bot�o de ligar, � gerado um sinal ativo (1) por uma parte do circuito (trilha), que chega � uma aglomerado de transistores que manipulam esse sinal e ativam ou desativam outras partes do circuito fazendo o MP3 player funcionar, o mesmo vale para, outros bot�es e fun��es de qualquer aparelho.

Espero que tenham compreendido a linguagem bin�ria e em que ela � usada, ah e da pr�xima vez que for usar um aparelho digital, tente se lembrar do bin�rio que voc� ir� entende-lo + facilmente, assim como o pr�ximo clique do mouse que voc� der que ir� enviar um sinal ativo (1) para algum dispositivo do computador.

98 Address already in use make sock could not bind to address 0 0 0 0 443

I was setting up SSL on localhost to get https://localhost. I was successfully able to get the digital signature, sign it. But when i restarted apache2 I was getting this error:

(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443

This means that port was already being listened. Hence at first I tried to kill the processes which are using that port. When this didnt work I tried this:

open /etc/apache2/ports.conf

Remove the line outside any <IfModule> tag which says Listen 443

Problem solved!!
