A Close Look at CCBCs 2016 Data on Books By About American Indians First Nations

Eds. note: See AICLs list for 2016.

On February 15, 2017, Cooperative Childrens Book Center (CCBC) at the University of Wisconsin released its statistics on the numbers of childrens books by/about American Indians/First Nations and People of Color during the year 2016.

This is vitally important work that CCBC has been doing for many years. Two important things to know about these statistics (I am not critical of CCBC at all in noting these two things; doing some of this work myself, I know how very hard it is to do, to get books, and then to categorize/analyze them).

The data is based on books that are sent to them. Small publishers generally cannot afford to send books out to review journals, bloggers, or centers like CCBC. That means books by small publishers who do great books by/about Native peoples may not be included in the data. It also means, however, that books by small publishers (or self published books) who do stereotypical books by Native people may not be included.

The data is statistical. It is a count. It is not about the quality of the books on the list. To see what they recommend, see CCBC Choices.

CCBC sent me the log of Native books for their 2016 counts. For the last few years I have been taking a close look at their log, focusing on fiction (as tagged by CCBC; books tagged as picture books are not included in this list) published by US publishers. Heres what I see.

Note!
Books in blue font are ones I recommend.
Books in red font are ones I do not recommend.
Books in bold are from "Big Five" publishers.
Book in plain, black font are ones I have not read, with one exception (I have mixed feelings about Alexies book.)

Fiction, US Publishers (books in bold are by one of the Big Five publishers)

Heres the list of fiction written by Native people (N = 4):
  • Bruchac, Joseph. The Long Run. 7th Generation
  • Bruchac, Joseph. Talking Leaves. Dial/Penguin
  • Erdrich, Louise. Makoons. HarperCollins
  • Smelcer, John. Stealing Indians. Leapfrog Press (Note: Smelcers claim to Native identity is contested)

Now heres the books on the CCBC list, by writers who are not Native (N = 17):
  • Abbott, E. F. Mary Jemison: Native American Captive. Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan
  • Carson, Rae. Like a River Glorious. Greenwillow/HarperCollins
  • Flanagan, John. Brotherband: The Ghostface. Penguin
  • Flood, Nancy Bo. Soldier Sister Fly Home. Charlesbridge
  • Heacox, Kim. Jimmy Bluefeather. Alaska Northwest Books
  • Hitchcock, Bonnie Sue. The Smell of Other Peoples Houses. Wendy Lamb/Penguin
  • Inglis, Lucy. Crow Mountain. Scholastic
  • Harrison, Margot. The Killer in Me. Hyperion/Hachette Book Group
  • Lewis, Ali. Timber Creek Station. Carolrhoda Lab
  • MacColl, Michaela. The Lost Ones. Calkins/Highlights
  • Mann, J. Albert. Scar: A Revolutionary War Tale. Calkins/Highlights
  • Massena, Ed. Wandmaker. Scholastic
  • Oppel, Kenneth. Every Hidden Thing. Simon and Schuster
  • Patel, Sonia. Rani Patel in Full Effect. Cinco Puntos Press
  • Reeve, Kirk. Sun Father Corn Mother. Sun Stone Press
  • Stokes, Jonathan. Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas. Philomel/Penguin
  • Velasquez, Crystal. Circle of Lies (Hunters of Chaos, Bk 2). Aladdin/Simon and Schuster

Who publishes what?
In 2016, the Big Five published two Native writers (Bruchac and Erdrich). Of those two, Ive read and recommend Makoons. Bruchacs book is out for review.

In 2016, the Big Five published eight non-Native writers (Abbott, Carson, Flanagan, Hitchcock, Harrison, Oppel, Stokes, and Velasquez). Of those eight, Ive read and do not recommend Carson, Hitchcock, and Harrison (not all reviews are online yet). I also do not recommend some of the non-Native books from small publishers: Flood, MacColl, Mann, Massena (not all reviews are online yet).

A comparison between 2015 and 2016

---------------------------------------------------2015--------------2016-------
Books by Native writers............................3......................4............
Books by Non-Native writers....................7.....................17...........

From US publishers, there were 10 in 2015. For 2016, it is 21. That is a huge change, but it is due to non-Native writers. Of the 17, Ive read eight and found all of them lacking in some way. What will I find if I read the other nine? Based on experience, Im not optimistic. Ernie Cox, at Reading While White, reviewed Abbotts book about Mary Jemison. I trust his review. I think it would end up on my not recommended list.

Theres more to do, in terms of analyzing CCBCs data. Thats what Ive got, for now.

___________________________________

Update, Feb 23 2017, 10:20 AM -- back to list titles in fiction/Canada, and picture books in US and Canada.

Fiction, Canadian Publishers. (Note: none in either category are by Big Five publishers.)

Native Writers (N = 2):
  • Currie, Susan. The Mask That Sang. Second Story Press
  • McLay, R. K. The Rahtrum Chronicles. Fifth House

Non-Native Writers (N = 4)

  • Bass, Karen. The Hill. Pajama Press
  • Koner, Miriam. Yellow Dog. Red Deer Press
  • Ouriou, Susan. Nathan. Red Deer Press
  • Richardson, Eve. Saving Stevie. Red Deer Press

It is interesting that there are not any books from the Big Five. The Big Five are in Canada, too, with "Canada" tagged on.

For example, Robbie Robertsons Testimony is published by Knopf Canada, which is part of Penguin Random House Canada. It is non-fiction, by the way, and it isnt meant for children. It came out in 2016. My guess is that it wasnt sent to CCBC. Robertson is Native. Another example is Joseph Boydens Three Day Road. It is published by Penguin Canada. It came out in 2008, in the adult market, but is assigned to high school students. Boyden is not Native.

A new Pentaho Library on the community site

Recently I blogged about a new Ctools book available. At the time I was positively shocked about the huge amount of books on Pentaho out there.

So we thought that we might as well collect that information on the website itself for easy access. So here it is: http://community.pentaho.com/ctools/knowledge/library/

Youll be able to even browser the library by category to more easily get to what youre looking for.

A brief tutorial on GRUB boot loader

A boot loader is a software program that runs when a computer boot. Its responsible for loading and transferring control to an operating system kernel software. The kernel, in turn, initializes the rest of the operating system.
GRUB (GRand Unified Boot-loader) or GNU GRUB is a very powerful multi-boot loader, which can load a wide variety of free operating systems, as well as proprietary operating systems with chain-loading. GRUB is designed to address the complexity of booting a personal computer. One of the important features in GRUB is flexibility; GRUB understands filesystems and kernel executable formats, so you can load an arbitrary operating system the way you like, without recording the physical position of your kernel on the disk. Thus you can load the kernel just by specifying its file name and the drive and partition where the kernel resides.
When booting with GRUB, you can use either a command-line interface or a menu interface. Using the command-line interface, you type the drive specification and file name of the kernel manually. In the menu interface, you just select an OS using the arrow keys. The menu is based on a configuration file which you prepare beforehand. While in the menu, you can switch to the command-line mode and vice-versa. You can even edit menu entries before using them.

Contents of GRUB
Installed programs:
grub-bios-setup, grub-editenv, grub-fstest, grub-install, grub-kbdcomp, grub-menulst2cfg, grub-mkconfig, grub-mkimage, grub-mklayout, grub-mknetdir, grub-mkpasswd-pbkdf2, grub-mkrelpath, grub-mkrescue, grub-mkstandalone, grub-ofpathname, grub-probe, grub-reboot, grub-script-check, grub-set-default, grub-sparc64-setup

Installed directories:
/usr/lib/grub, /etc/grub.d, /usr/share/grub, /boot/grub

Short Descriptions
grub-bios-setup                 Is a helper program for grub-install
grub-editenv                      A tool to edit the environment block
grub-fstest                         Tool to debug the filesystem driver
grub-install                        Install GRUB on your drive
grub-kbdcomp                   Script that converts an xkb layout into one recognized by GRUB
grub-menulst2cfg              Converts a GRUB Legacy menu.lst into a grub.cfg for use with GRUB 2
grub-mkconfig                   Generate a grub config file
grub-mkimage                   Make a bootable image of GRUB
grub-mklayout                   Generates a GRUB keyboard layout file
grub-mknetdir                   Prepares a GRUB netboot directory
grub-mkpasswd-pbkdf2    Generates an encrypted PBKDF2 password for use in the boot menu
grub-mkrelpath                 Makes a system pathname relative to its root
grub-mkrescue                  Make a bootable image of GRUB suitable for a floppy disk or CDROM/DVD
grub-mkstandalone           Generates a standalone image
grub-ofpathname               Is a helper program that prints the path of a GRUB device
grub-probe                         Probe device information for a given path or device

7 Apps That Prove You Don’t Need Adobe Creative Suite on Linux

People have been asking Adobe to make Creative Suite available on Linux for several years now, but Adobe has been adamant about its answer: no. Why not? Most likely because the market share is too small to be worth the effort.
But the demographic is there. The overlap between Linux users and creative users is larger than many of us would expect, and many of them have been dying for a Linux Creative Suite for years.
The good news is that now, in 2016, viable options do exist.
Between all of the Adobe Creative products currently available, most of them have usable Linux alternatives. And while you wont be able to use the Creative Cloud mobile apps with them, theyre still worth checking.

For Photoshop: GIMP or Krita

Photoshop alternatives for Linux is unsurprisingly one of the most common search queries among first-time Linux users. And while GIMP was the go-to answer for many years, thats kind of changing now.

linux-creative-suite-gimp

Not that theres anything wrong with GIMP. In fact, as far as needing a Photoshop clone on Linux, theres nothing better. GIMP is powerful and feature-rich straight out of the box, and can be improved with third-party plugins.
So yes, even though GIMP has its flaws such as the fact that it isnt as intuitive or polished its definitely the closest thing to Photoshop right now.

linux-creative-suite-krita

But theres another program out there thats been turning heads over the past few years. Its called Krita and users are slowly abandoning GIMP and flocking over to it instead.
Krita is primarily a tool for digital painters and artists, so its only a good alternative to Photoshop if thats the kind of work you do. But for things like logos, drawings, and artwork, Krita is more user-friendly.

For Lightroom: Darktable or RawTherapee

If youre a photographer, Photoshop may not actually be the best application for your needs you might want to use Lightroom instead. Unfortunately, neither are available for Linux, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
There are two free alternatives to Lightroom that are actually quite good. Neither is objectively better than the other, so well recommend both and leave it up to you to decide which one you like more.

linux-creative-suite-darktable

The first is Darktable, which is the most oft-recommended program among Linux photographers. The interface is complex but it turns out good results. Its also relatively light on resource usage, so better for older computers and weaker hardware.

linux-creative-suite-rawtherapee

The second is RawTherapee. The interface is simpler to learn and navigate, but lacks some features that you may need (such as selective editing with masks). RawTherapee is also slightly worse at managing large libraries with lots of photos.
Compare the feature set for Darktable with the feature set for RawTherapee to help make your decision a bit easier.

For Illustrator: Inkscape

Not many free applications can be considered as good as their paid counterparts, but Inkscape is one of them. In fact, its one of the best free alternatives to paid software out there. No need to spend money here.

linux-creative-suite-inkscape

Inkscape is what you should use if you want to create or edit vector graphics. Vector graphics are mathematical rather than pixel-based, so they can be printed at any resolution. Theyre great for creating infographics, for example.
Although Inkscape suffers from a sub-par interface and lack of professional polish, its feature complete and certainly usable in a professional environment if needed.

For Premiere Pro: Lightworks or Kdenlive

Professional video editing has often been seen as an activity best suited for Macs, and only in the past decade have viable options come to light on Windows. But for Linux? Video editing can be a pain.

linux-creative-suite-lightworks

So if you can, we recommend paying for quality Linux software. Lightworks is very good it was used to edit The Wolf of Wall Street, Pulp Fiction, Hugo, and more but its also a bit costly at $438 (or $25 per month). However, you do get what you pay for.
Sure, Lightworks can be used for free, but there are restrictions. You can only export up to 720p and you lose a lot of quality-of-life features, such as timeline rendering, advanced project management, and Boris FX packages.
The paid version unlocks everything and can export up to 4K.

linux-creative-suite-kdenlive

If you want a video editor thats completely free but still as professional as possible, Kdenlive is your best option. Its open source, actively developed, and packed full of advanced features.

For Animate: Synfig

Animate is the program formerly known as Flash Pro, the vector animation program that was used in the past to create Flash animations. Now that the web has moved from Flash to HTML5, Adobe rebranded as Animate.

linux-creative-suite-synfig

Synfig has been the open source alternative to Adobes program since 2005, and is still the best choice for those who want to pursue 2D vector animation without handing over cash to Adobe. Its free and in active development.
Synfig uses its own animation file format, but can export to AVI, MPG, GIF, SVG, PNG, and more. Despite the learning curve, youll be able to pick up the ropes quickly enough thanks to the user-contributed documentation and tutorials.

For Audition: Ardour or LMMS

Audition doesnt get as much time in the limelight as Photoshop or Premiere Pro, but its a nifty piece of software thats worthy of recognition. Formerly known as Cool Edit Pro, Audition is what youd use to edit digital audio.
Audition is a digital audio workstation in the same line as Logic Pro on OS X. From what I know, Audition is used mainly by professional podcasters, but can be used for so much more, like recording and mixing your own music.

linux-creative-suite-ardour

Audacity is the go-to audio editor for most Linux users, but when Audacity isnt enough, you should think about either Ardour or LMMS.
Ardour is the best DAW available on Linux right now. Not only does it have a clean and usable interface, but its packed full of advanced features. Very good and highly recommended.
Its available for free but only produces audio up to 10 minutes long. You can unlock the full feature set by buying the full version, which has a pay what you want price tag. Seriously, you can buy it for as low as $1.

linux-creative-suite-lmms

LMMS, formerly known as Linux MultiMedia Studio, is another good option. This one is completely free but slightly inferior to Ardour. The interface is a bit harder to grasp and the learning curve is a bit steeper, but its still useful.
Check out the LMMS Showcase to see examples of tracks that have been made with LMMS.

For InDesign: Scribus

I dont know of many people who do desktop publishing on Linux, but if you need an alternative to Adobe InDesign, rest assured that such an alternative does exist. Its called Scribus.
Scribus can be used to create brochures, newsletters, posters, and even book layouts. It can also be used to create animated and interactive PDFs the kind of stuff youd expect from any desktop publishing program worth its salt.
It does have a few downsides though, such as the fact it cant import or export InDesign files. Also, its not entirely polished and free of bugs, which can prove frustrating for heavy users. Fortunately, the Scribus documentation is pretty good.

The Ultimate Linux Creative Suite

If you absolutely need programs that are on par with Adobe, then save yourself the headache. Run a copy of Windows alongside Linux (either in a virtual machine or in a dual-boot setup) and get the Creative Cloud applications.
But if youre okay with a bit of sacrifice here and there, these programs make for a passable Linux Creative Suite:
  • GIMP
  • Darktable
  • Inkscape
  • Lightworks
  • Synfig
  • Ardour
  • Scribus

5G visionaries make a head start on the internet of things

There will be 50 billion everyday objects connected to the internet by 2020 Photo: (c) John Rensten
With the 5G mobile network set to launch in 2020, the UKs brightest minds are poised to drive innovation, championing new hardware and technologies that will transform the way we live.
By the time of 5Gs inception, it is estimated that there will be up to 100 billion internet-ready devices on the planet. So, while youll be glad to hear that internet speeds will dramatically increase, with the capability to download a movie in less than a second, this really is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what it will enable.
Anyone whos read a newspaper in the last six months will no doubt have come across the concept of the internet of things, this idea of machine-to-machine communication has the potential to completely overhaul the way we use technology. At present, the radio spectrum through which we communicate is extremely congested; 5G will increase the number of and broaden the available channels, allowing a larger number to operate simultaneously, with higher bandwidths, and with reliably lower-latency. And all of this with reduced power consumption.
This capability will allow large numbers of low-power inanimate objects equipped with sensors to talk to other internet-ready devices, reliably and without significant delay. For example, driverless cars will be brought to reality on a commercially useful scale, and will be able to receive driving instructions, and a steady stream of real-time data about traffic volumes and the movement of other vehicles. In this way, cars of the future will be able to calculate the safest, fastest route. These smart cars could also more effectively detect and report faults in the vehicle and, to save the owner time, book a service at the nearest garage and drive there independently.
One of the most exciting areas of application is healthcare. In effect, personal hardware devices which monitor information such as blood glucose and heart rate could transfer data about patients vital signs remotely, passing it to a doctor and alerting them if an individuals condition has worsened. This technology could help to increase the amount of out-patient care that can be delivered, thereby reducing the need for overnight hospital stays and freeing up beds. Furthermore, ambulances on the way to an emergency could access patient medical records and pull up real-time data on their current condition before arriving at the scene, allowing more immediately effective treatment.
Even though 5G has not yet been fully defined, the promise of a faster, more reliable network is mobilising engineers around the world. The combination of a lack of constraints and the promise of high monetary rewards available for those whose technologies take off, has acted as a catalyst in promoting further research and development. While there are opportunities for those developing hardware and the algorithms that will support the low power and reliability requirements of the internet of things, data security is another area which will need to be greatly advanced for the 5G network to thrive.
With more devices connected to the internet, and these devices collecting personal data such as medical information and location, security will be of central importance. Devices holding sensitive information are vulnerable to attack and it is likely that 5G capabilities will herald the creation of data vaults; Fort Knox-style storage facilities protected from cyber and physical attack.
It is vital that companies creating these new technologies obtain patents to protect their intellectual property at an early stage. Doing so will enable the sale and licensing of products which add functionality to, or are enabled by, the 5G network. Some businesses may choose to adopt a dual patent strategy, the first protecting their primary market which is not 5G related, and the second strategy protecting their more speculative innovation that could form part of the new 5G standard.
While the criteria for the standard is still unknown, the creation of the first truly global mobile network represents a huge opportunity for innovators. Taking action to create new technology now, and protecting that technology with patents could create new products and services for companies to sell, create jobs, and open up export markets. Whether or not all of these innovations are used by the 5G network, the current surge in research and development is going to be hugely beneficial for Britains technology industry.

A Better Method for Embedding YouTube Videos on your Website

It is easy to embed a YouTube video but youll be surprised to know how much extra weight that embedded YouTube video can add to your web pages. The browser has to download about half a Mb of extra JavaScript files (see screenshot) for rendering the YouTube video player alone. And these files are downloaded even if the visitor never plays the embedded video.

The embedded video not only increases the byte size of your web pages but the browser has to make multiple HTTP requests to render the video player. This increases the overall loading time of your page thus affecting the page speed score. The other drawback with the default YouTube embed code is that it isnt responsive. If people view your website on a mobile phone, the video player may not resize properly for the small screen.

Embed YouTube Videos without Increasing Page Size

Google+ uses a clever technique for embedding YouTube videos it just embeds the thumbnail image of a YouTube video and the actual video player is loaded only when the user manually clicks the thumbnail.

YouTube thumbnail images are about 15 kB in size so we are able to reduce the byte size of web pages by 500+ kb. Thats huge!

The video above is embedded using the same on-demand technique (demo).

When a visitor clicks the play button, the thumbnail image is replaced with the standard YouTube video player with autoplay set to 1 so the plays the video instantly. The advantage is that the extra YouTube JavaScript gets loaded only when someone decides to watch the embedded video and not otherwise.

Light and Responsive YouTube Embeds

The standard embed code for YouTube uses the IFRAME tag and the width and height of the video player are hard-coded thus making the player non-responsive.

The new on-demand embed code for YouTube is slightly different. You need not specify the player size as we are now embedding the video responsively. Also, the IFRAME is replaced with a DIV tag and the IFRAME is added to the page only when the visitor clicks the play button.

YouTube Embed Code

Embed YouTube Videos Responsively  Tutorial

Copy-paste the following snippet anywhere in your web page where you would like the YouTube video to appear. Remember to replace VIDEO_ID with the actual ID of the YouTube video.

<div class="youtube-player" data-id="VIDEO_ID"></div>

We will not assign height and width since the video player will automatically occupy the width of the parent while the height is auto-calculated. You can paste multiple DIV blocks with different video IDs if you need to embed multiple videos on the same page.

Next, place the JavaScript anywhere in your web template. It finds all embedded videos on a web page and then replaces the DIV elements with the video thumbnails.

<script>

/* Light YouTube Embeds by @labnol */
/* Web: http://ift.tt/2bGFoam */

document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded",
function() {
var div, n,
v = document.getElementsByClassName("youtube-player");
for (n = 0; n < v.length; n++) {
div = document.createElement("div");
div.setAttribute("data-id", v[n].dataset.id);
div.innerHTML = labnolThumb(v[n].dataset.id);
div.onclick = labnolIframe;
v[n].appendChild(div);
}
});

function labnolThumb(id) {
var thumb = <img src="http://ift.tt/2bGFpex;,
play = <div class="play"></div>;
return thumb.replace("ID", id) + play;
}

function labnolIframe() {
var iframe = document.createElement("iframe");
var embed = "https://www.youtube.com/embed/ID?autoplay=1";
iframe.setAttribute("src", embed.replace("ID", this.dataset.id);
iframe.setAttribute("frameborder", "0");
iframe.setAttribute("allowfullscreen", "1");
this.parentNode.replaceChild(iframe, this);
}

</script>

Finally, paste the CSS before the closing head tag of your web template.

This method will reduce the size of your web pages by 500 KB while making your site mobile friendly. You may refer to the annotated code to understanding how on-demand embedding works.

Please do note that Chrome and Safari browsers on iPhone and Android only allow playback of HTML5 video when initiated by a user interaction. They block embedded media from automatic playback to prevent unsolicited downloads over cellular networks.

A brand new XUP board is sitting on my desk

... and even better it doesnt have the old jtag programmer onboard so it works with GRMON! So much better than the serial debug system I was using before. It programs about 10 times faster for a start.

A New Axiom for Educ ati on

One of the events taking place at this weeks Educon 2.2, is Encienda Educon, an hour of lightning seminars scheduled to take place during lunch on Saturday. Though I may be crazy enough to attempt an Ignite presentation, Im also smart enough to know that its a highly challenging format; one worthy of rehearsal.

For those unable to join us at Educon, my 5 minute talk runs a bit longer when an introduction and closing comments are added:

A Fluke of Security Issues from Updating Software on Windows Based X Ray Testers

Imagine youd like to test X-ray machines in a hospital, dental office, etc. for safety and calibration.  X-ray testers come into play.  So how does one maintain the software used with X-ray testers?  How do you know that youve downloaded the legitimate software?

The TNT 12000 X-Ray Test Device from Fluke Biomedical distributes its software updates online.  Worried about the security of your hospital network while downloading software?  Concerned that installing software might violate your hospitals corporate security policies and get you in hot water with your CIO or CISO if you accidentally download malware?  No problem.  Trust the Internet.  Just download the .EXE file or the ZIP file using any shared Internet connection from an HTTP site.  No need for connection-oriented SSL security or pesky end-to-end digital signatures of integrity-protected content.  Another time saver for increased productivity.

802 11 Networks on Radio Mobile Part 2 Coverage Maps

Now that we have mastered point to point links using RM, the next major feature is generating coverage maps.

For this tutorial we will be continuing with our Fictional WISP, SaharaWisp. We already have our two highsites configured, and we have a link running between the two. We are now going to be adding two 5.8ghz sectorized antennas to each tower, and plotting the resulting coverage.

Start by opening your existing network file in Radio Mobile.

If you dont have RM already, you can grab the installer HERE:

1. Preparing the Settings

Next we will be defining each new antenna as a unit under File->Unit Properties:

Note:
If you have been following my tutorials, I have changed the name from SN-Grid-1 to SW-S1-Grid. This is to make identification easier. SW-S1-Grid is SaharaWisp-Site1-Grid.
Our sectors will be for example: SW-S2-SN which is SaharaWisp-Site2-SectorNorth

All units (antennae) at Site 1 will therefore have the same coordinates. The same applies for all units at Site 2.

Start by selecting SW-S1-Grid and click Copy.
This will copy the coordinates to your clipboard.

Proceed by selecting Unit 3 in the left hand pane, and clicking Paste. This will make Unit 3s coords the same as the ones of SW-S1-Grid, also change the name to SW-S1-SN.

Also do the Same for Unit 4, changing the name to SW-S1-SS.

Repeat the process with Unit 5 and Unit 6 using the coordinated from SW-S2-Grid and make the names for the two new units SW-S2-SN and SW-S2-SS

Select Unit 6 and simply name it "Client" without any coordinates.

Close the Units Properties Window and open File->Networks Properties

On the left hand pane, select Net 2  and enter the following on the Parameters tab:

  • Net name: Coverage
  • Min Freq: 5180mhz
  • Max Freq: 5800mhz
  • Polarization: Vertical (or Horizontal if it applies)
  • Mode of Variability: Spot
  • % of situations: 70%

In the topology tab, you can untick the Visible box, since we dont need to generate links for any of these units. Similarly, the Topology does not actually matter, since these units dont simulate any inter-connections.

Lets skip forward to the Systems tab again. We need to configure a system to act as our sector, and one to simulate a client. The client system is already configured since I will be using Ubiquiti Bullet m5 with a 27db grid antenna as my client side connection, you may choose to use something else.

Select System 2 in the left hand pane, and select Mtik Metal 5SHPn - 20db/90deg from the dropdown. This is a preconfigured Miktrotik Metal groove on a 90 degree sector antenna.

Ok, lets return to the Membership tab.

Here you want to configure five new units, let us start with a simple one, the client:

Make sure that the Client unit that we created earlier is ticked and selected.
Enter the following values.

  • Role of Client: Command (this can be anything it really makes no difference)
  • System: UBNT BulletM5 - 27db Grid
  • Antenna Height: 3M (you can put the estimated minimum height for client side connections)

Now we want to make sure that each of the Sector antennae is ticked, and configured as below:

  • Role of Client: Command (this can be anything it really makes no difference)
  • System: Mtik Metal 5SHPn - 20db/90deg
  • Antenna Height: 10M
  • Azimuth: 0deg for the north facing sectors, 180deg for the south facing sectors

You can now close the Networks Properties window.

2. Plotting the coverage Map:

You have two ways to plot coverage maps, we will deal with both, starting with the simplest, ie. the Single Polar coverage map.

Let us start by creating the base picture:

Click File->Map Properties.

In order to contain our coverage plots, let us increase the height of the map to 40km.
Click Extract

2.1 Single Polar Coverage

Single polar coverage allows you to plot the coverage of a single units coverage area.

Click on the Single Polar Coverage icon:

Enter the following parameters:

Center Unit: The unit from which you want to plot the coverage
Mobile Unit: The unit that is indicative of a typical client device (CPE)
Network: Should automatically be the Coverage network
Link Direction: Center Tx - Mobile Rx

Radial Range (this determines how far out you plot the coverage):
Minimum: 0.01 km
Maximum: 15 km

Azimuth Range (this determines the angle that will be plotted):
Minimum: 0
Maximum: 360
Step: 0.5 (this is the effective resolution of the plot)

The Plot section is rather subjective, ie. whatever works well for you, but let us make a simple example:
Check the following boxes:
Fill Area
Network Style
This means that it will fill the area based on the parameters defined under Networks Settings/Style Tab.

Initiate the plot by clicking Draw
This can take a while depending on your hardware and the size and resolution of the plot.

You will be asked to redraw the picture in gray mode, since this is a requirement, you can simply click Yes.

When it is done you will be asked what you want to do with the plot. I usually keep it in the current picture.

Now, after all this work, lets have some fun; Save the picture by clicking File-> Save Picture As and give it a name, I will use coverage.png

If you open the folder where you saved these files, you will see that RM created a file called coverage.kml, go ahead and open it.

You can now see your coverage map overlaid into Google Earth as below:

2.2 Combined Cartesian Plot:

The combined Cartesian plot allows you to plot the coverage for a number of units/antennae at the same time. Note that with large networks this can take some time. My network runs for about 8 hours to generate high resolution coverage maps. It works by analyzing each pixel on the map for each tower in the list and determining the best signal from ANY of the selected towers.

Since everything else stays the same, let us start with a new empty image. We are going to generate a white image here so that we dont export the topography to Google Earth.

Click on File->New Picture

Select White and click Draw

This gives you a plain white render of your area.

Now, click on Tools->Radio Coverage->Combined Cartesian.

Make sure all the Sector antennae are selected in the left hand pane.
Enter the following details:
  • Mobile Unit: Client
  • In Network: Coverage
  • Use Network Antenna Settings: Checked
  • Maximum Range: 15km
  • Signal Range Unit:
    • dBm: Selected
    • Draw size: 2.5 Pixels (decreasing this can drastically increase render time)
    • Network Style: Checked
Note: Playing around with the Signal range unit settings can give you more satisfactory results, this is a simple example.

Click Draw

Again, when saving it, you will also get a Google Earth KML file.

Enjoy

Comment if you have any suggestions on how I can improve this.

A hush falls on the battlefield

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming, starting with the longest changelist weve ever composed. If you were to stack all the text in this changelog it would reach the Mad Moon and back.
First things first: Spirit Breaker and Silencer have arrived.

Todays update also includes several features we are really excited about. First, weve incorporated the latest Dota 6.73 changes, including 5 new items: Rod of Atos, Heavens Halberd, Ring of Aquila, Abyssal Blade and Tranquil Boots. Weve also began deploying our new Spectator proxy system that will allow games to have an unlimited number of spectators. Not all games will support this at the start, while we gather data on the systems performance, but we expect to finish full deployment soon. Another spectating feature weve added is Autospeed to replays: Autospeed will fast-forward games until high intensity moments are detected at which point it will return to regular speeds. So you can now watch Dendi harvest Battle Furies with your hands free!
For those running tournaments, this update also includes a new option in Private Lobbies to select which version to run: Latest or Tournament. The Latest version will always include all the most recent changes, while Tournament will create a game with the current tournament rules. And in other tournament news:
  • StarLeague teams have been confirmed.
  • The Brawl has opened up signups.
  • The Premier is ongoing right now with coverage over at DotaCommentaries.com.
