A che punto è la Tesla Model 3 l’auto elettrica “economica”

Molti di voi mi hanno chiesto come sta andando la mia prenotazione della Tesla Model 3, l�auto elettrica che dovrebbe trasformare il mercato con la sua autonomia (circa 340 km), la sua ricarica veloce (circa 40 minuti per un �pieno�) e il suo prezzo non economico ma abbordabile (35.000 dollari nel modello base). Ieri sono stati annunciati alcuni dati ufficiali, per cui vale la pena di tornare sull�argomento e riepilogare quello che � successo dal 2 aprile scorso, quando ho fatto la prenotazione.
L�azienda Tesla Motors ora si chiama Tesla e basta; ha acquisito SolarCity, grande produttrice di pannelli solari, e la tedesca Grohmann, specializzata in automazione spinta della produzione; ieri ha pubblicato i risultati del quarto trimestre 2016 e dell�anno scorso, dichiarando ricavi nel 2016 per 7 miliardi di dollari (+73% rispetto al 2015) con perdite per circa 700 milioni. La strada per il pareggio, insomma, � ancora lunga, e la sfida per trasformarsi da una fabbrica di auto di lusso a tiratura limitata a un produttore di massa � ancora tutta da vincere. Ma i soldi per proseguire, dice Elon Musk, ci sono: ancora 3,1 miliardi di dollari in cassa.
Secondo quanto annunciato da Tesla, la fabbricazione dei prototipi della Model 3 � iniziata questo mese (qui la prima immagine �rubata�) e i primi crash test sono gi� stati effettuati. La produzione �limitata� iniziale di serie della Model 3 partir� a luglio di quest�anno e raggiunger� volumi elevati entro settembre, con l�obiettivo di arrivare a 5000 esemplari a settimana entro fine 2017 (secondo le dichiarazioni di Elon Musk raccolte da Teslarati, 1000/settimane a luglio, 4000/settimana ad agosto, 5000/settimana a settembre) e 10.000 a settimana entro il 2018. Il debutto sul mercato della Model 3 avverr� �nella seconda met� dell�anno�.
Queste stime pongono limiti massimi alle produzioni annuali per il 2017 e 2018: nel caso (del tutto ipotetico) di una produzione a pieno regime dall�inizio, verrebbero fabbricate al massimo 130.000 Model 3 nel 2017 e 520.000 nel 2018. A titolo di confronto, in tutto il 2016 Tesla ha prodotto 83.922 auto, specificamente Model S e X (+64% rispetto al 2015). Questi numeri danno un�idea della difficolt� di ottenere un�espansione cos� rapida. Fra l�altro, gli ordini di questi modelli di lusso vanno a gonfie vele, con il 49% in pi� nel quarto trimestre 2016 rispetto allo stesso periodo nel 2015.
Non si sa quante siano attualmente le prenotazioni per la Model 3: Elon Musk ha preferito non dichiarare cifre specifiche perch�, dice, �la gente interpreta troppo questa cosa�, ma sono oltre 400.000. Oltre diecimila provengono da dipendenti Tesla o SpaceX, che avranno la priorit� su tutti (e faranno da cavie) e potranno cominciare a configurare online il proprio esemplare poco prima di luglio 2017. La presentazione ufficiale dell�auto, nella sua forma definitiva, � ora prevista per luglio anzich� marzo-aprile; dopo la presentazione, il configuratore online sar� disponibile al pubblico generico. Alla luce di questi dati, mi aspetto di poter configurare l�auto a luglio 2017 e di poterla forse ricevere a met� del 2018. Sapevo che l�attesa non sarebbe stata breve e non ho fretta.
Si stima che il pacco batterie della Model 3 abbia una capacit� di circa 55 kWh nel modello base, ed � stato visto un prototipo con doppio motore e pacco batterie da 70 kWh, ma Musk ha dichiarato ieri che si aspetta che la Model 3 abbia in media un pacco da 60-70 kWh.
Nell�ambito della semplificazione rispetto alle costose Model S e X, la Model 3 non avr� le famose maniglie retrattili che escono automaticamente quando ci si avvicina all�auto, ma user� una soluzione differente.
Intanto procede spedita la costruzione in Nevada della Gigafactory, ossia lo stabilimento gigante ad elevata automazione nel quale viene costruita la Model 3 (la �macchina che fabbrica la macchina�, come la chiamano in Tesla). Da gennaio, parte dello stabilimento � gi� in uso per la produzione in massa delle batterie di nuovo formato, le 2170, che vengono gi� installate negli accumulatori per uso domestico (Powerwall) e verranno usate per le Model 3 (la produzione delle Model 3 avverr� anche nello stabilimento �normale� a Fremont). Entro fine anno verranno annunciate le sedi di almeno altre due Gigafactory.
La rete di ricarica rapida Supercharger si sta espandendo e trasformando: per evitare abusi da parte di utenti che lasciano l�auto parcheggiata presso il punto di ricarica anche dopo che � finita la carica, Tesla ha introdotto una �tariffa di occupazione� di 35 eurocent al minuto (con una tolleranza di cinque minuti). Inoltre, come previsto, le Model 3 non avranno la ricarica gratuita a vita, ma la pagheranno se e quando la useranno: lo stesso vale anche per le Model S e X vendute dal 15 gennaio 2017 in poi. Per tutte le auto Tesla ci sono inoltre 400 kWh/anno, circa 1600 km, di carica gratuita).
Le prestazioni delle auto Tesla gi� in produzione hanno raggiunto ormai livelli quasi assurdi: gli esemplari di punta della Model S accelerano da 0 a 100 km/h in 2,27 secondi, stracciando anche le pi� costose supercar milionarie a benzina. Accelerazioni paurose di questo genere sono un ottimo veicolo pubblicitario per togliere dall�opinione pubblica l�idea che le auto elettriche debbano essere mortificanti da guidare, ma non hanno alcuna utilit� pratica nell�uso quotidiano. Invece aumenta l�autonomia, con le versioni 100D che arrivano a 540 km (stima EPA).
La guida assistita (Autopilot) � stata inoltre scagionata per quanto riguarda il ben noto incidente mortale in Florida: le indagini hanno appurato che il conducente non stava guardando la strada e non � intervenuto sui freni anche quando l�ostacolo mortale (un camion di traverso a un�intersezione autostradale) era ben visibile. L�ente statunitense NHTSA ha anzi indicato che l�introduzione dello sterzo assistito (Autosteer) ha ridotto di quasi il 40% gli incidenti delle Tesla.
A proposito di sicurezza, Ars Technica nota che Tesla, senza grande clamore e anzi un po� in sordina, sta introducendo un pacchetto assicurativo, creato insieme ad alcune compagnie assicurative, concepito specificamente per i neoproprietari Tesla, argomentando che se una Tesla � pi� sicura degli altri veicoli grazie alla guida assistita, le assicurazioni dovrebbero tenerne conto. La concorrenza, nel frattempo, non � rimasta a guardare: sto tenendo d�occhio la Chevrolet Bolt, o Opel Ampera-e, che � gi� in commercio (in tiratura limitata e solo in alcuni paesi) e ha un�autonomia realistica di quasi 500 km con un prezzo di circa 38.000 dollari. � decisamente interessante, anche se ha il limite di una ricarica relativamente lenta che penalizzerebbe parecchio i viaggi molto lunghi e non ha il software aggiornabile senza visite in officina. 2014 Ford Fiesta ST - The B-segment has just gained its first true hot hatch, and like its larger Focus ST sibling, the Fiesta ST brings turbocharged power and an Aston Martin-like front end to the subcompact table. Available in the U.S. market exclusively as a four-door hatchback, the Fiesta ST packs an estimated 197 hp and 214-lb-ft from a turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost I-4.
2014 Jaguar XFR-S - The folks at Jaguar have been exploring their wild side lately, and the 2014 Jaguar XFR-S is the latest proof of that. The XFR-S gets the same performance goodies from the XKR-S coupe and convertible, including its Performance Active Exhaust system and the supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 rated at 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. Act fast if you want one because only 100 are headed to the U.S.
2014 Mazda6 – The all-new 2014 Mazda6 may be the best-looking midsize sedan in the segment. While the ZoomZoom offering won’t offer V-6 or turbocharged four-cylinder power like many of its competitors, we found the 184-hp 2.5-liter Skyactiv gasoline engine provided plenty of power to motivate the sub-3000 pound sedan in our 2014 Mazda6 First Drive. Mazda confirmed the 2.2-liter Skyactiv diesel engine will arrive after the initial launch and the oil-burner is expected to produce around 170 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque once official ratings are released.
Fiat 500e - Mean doesn’t usually come to mind when describing an EV, which is why the Fiat 500e took us by surprise. Looking more closely related to the pugnacious 500 Abarth than the garden-variety 500 hatch, the 500e will be available with the e-Sport package that adds orange accented dark-face wheels, orange stripes and mirror caps, and a blacked-out fascia. The 500e is an electric car for those who care as much (or more) about style as they do about saving the planet.
Volkswagen Beetle Convertible - There was no better place to reveal the Beetle Convertible than sunny L.A. (funny, it rained), where the production car stood out among the crowd with its iconic and retro styling. Designed to celebrate the storied history of the drop-top Bug that started back in 1949 with the type 15 Convertible, the soft-top retains the same profile as the hardtop with its fantastic roofline. The sweet pair of white shades handed out for the reveal wasn’t a bad deal, either.
2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition – When the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon arrived a decade ago it was the most capable factory equipped Wrangler ever. Now the 10th Anniversary Edition holds that title with a half-inch more lift, beefy steel bumpers, Warn winch, rock rails, taillight guards, electronic-locking Dana 44 axles and Rock-Trac transfer case. The special edition Wrangler is painted Billet Silver with red and black exterior trim as well as red leather seats and silver accents inside. What’s not to love about a body-on-frame SUV you can take straight from the dealer to the trails?
2013 Porsche Cayman – There wasn’t anything too surprising about the Cayman, since we’ve already had plenty of time to get familiar with the Boxster, its top-down sibling. Still, the new mid-engined coupe from Stuttgart looks great (check out that spoiler!) and we have no doubt it will be a blast to drive. We can’t wait to get our hands on one.

And when you start with a car that’s already easy on the eyes and an impressive performer, you can expect a showstopper. That’s precisely what the three-pointed star brand delivered at this year’s L.A. show with the SLS AMG Black Series. With 622 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque on tap, a weight reduction of more than 150 pounds, and a number of aerodynamic improvements, the SLS Black Series could be the perfect follow-up to the track-oriented C63 Black Series.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition Debut – 2012 L.A Mitsubishi has redesigned its three-row Outlander to be the most fuel-efficient three-row crossover available in North America. At the 2012 L.A. auto show today, the automaker unveiled the new 2014 Outlander alongside the 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition. Mitsubishi also confirmed that the Mirage global small car will come to the U.S. next September after its 2013 New York Auto Show debut.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition Debut – 2012 L.A
To make the 2014 Outlander the most efficient three-row crossover around, Mitsubishi focused on improved aerodynamics, weight reduction, as well as better HVAC and drivetrain performance. Mitsubishi says the 2014 Outlander’s new sheetmetal and streamlined front fascia contribute to a 7 percent increase in aerodynamic efficiency while weight has been reduced by about 200 pounds. A revised interior heating and cooling system minimizes energy use.
The revised 166-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is mated to a CVT with “improved shift feel” as well as Acceleration Control for better initial throttle response and the ability to hold gears longer. We weren’t too thrilled with the CVT in our now-gone Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, so we’re looking forward to finding out just how much of a difference these transmission changes make. Top-of-the-line Outlander GT models are powered by 224-hp 3.0-liter V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic with a revised torque converter performance and a new final drive ratio to improve fuel mileage. Keeping the focus on efficiency, the available all-wheel-drive system is lighter than the one on the last-generation crossover. Later on, Mitsubishi will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander.
An ECO mode reduces fuel consumption by reducing engine power on initial acceleration as well as the AC system’s airflow. For all-wheel-drive models, ECO mode also reverts back to front-drive mode unless the system senses wheel slip.
Mitsubishi Outlander ES base models include third-row seating, which the automaker says has been redesigned to be more comfortable and easier to operate. Mitsubishi Outlander SE models include a six-inch touch screen with back-up camera, HD radio, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, passive entry with push-button start and the voice command of smartphones and iPods connected via a USB port. The V-6 engine and all-wheel drive are standard on GT models, which feature faux wood interior trim, HID headlights and satellite radio. Available fearures include panoramic roof, 710-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system, leather seats, adaptive cruise control, forward collision management, and lane departure warning.
The five-passenger 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition shown alongside the 2014 Outlander celebrates 30 years of the automaker’s North American sales. Limited Edition models receive black side mirrors, center bumper, fender flares, and roof rails; alloy wheels feature an argent finish. Inside, leather seating with a two-tone Dove Grey and Black color scheme is available. Of course, Limited Edition badging adorns the compact crossover. The Outlander Sport is built in Normal, Illinois.
The revised 166-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is mated to a CVT with “improved shift feel” as well as Acceleration Control for better initial throttle response and the ability to hold gears longer. We weren’t too thrilled with the CVT in our now-gone Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, so we’re looking forward to finding out just how much of a difference these transmission changes make. Top-of-the-line Outlander GT models are powered by 224-hp 3.0-liter V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic with a revised torque converter performance and a new final drive ratio to improve fuel mileage. Keeping the focus on efficiency, the available all-wheel-drive system is lighter than the one on the last-generation crossover. Later on, Mitsubishi will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander.
An ECO mode reduces fuel consumption by reducing engine power on initial acceleration as well as the AC system’s airflow. For all-wheel-drive models, ECO mode also reverts back to front-drive mode unless the system senses wheel slip.
Mitsubishi Outlander ES base models include third-row seating, which the automaker says has been redesigned to be more comfortable and easier to operate. Mitsubishi Outlander SE models include a six-inch touch screen with back-up camera, HD radio, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, passive entry with push-button start and the voice command of smartphones and iPods connected via a USB port. The V-6 engine and all-wheel drive are standard on GT models, which feature faux wood interior trim, HID headlights and satellite radio. Available fearures include panoramic roof, 710-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system, leather seats, adaptive cruise control, forward collision management, and lane departure warning.
The five-passenger 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition shown alongside the 2014 Outlander celebrates 30 years of the automaker’s North American sales. Limited Edition models receive black side mirrors, center bumper, fender flares, and roof rails; alloy wheels feature an argent finish. Inside, leather seating with a two-tone Dove Grey and Black color scheme is available. Of course, Limited Edition badging adorns the compact crossover. The Outlander Sport is built in Normal, Illinois.
