A Moment of Clarity

"Its as if one were seeing a frame for the first time: the image opens up, the frame opens, then the screen, the theatre, and finally us too, everything is opened and we gaze wide-eyed into this most intensive clarity"

7 Reasons Im scared of Resident Evil 7 but will buy it anyway!

It is almost here everyone! Resident Evil 7 will be releasing later this month, and I personally cant wait... Or can I? Honestly this one actually scares me, and Im a little unsure if Ill actually be able to finish it. That being said, Im getting it anyway! Call me a wimp or whatever, but horror has never been my forte, and this is the first Resident Evil that I ever felt was a true horror game. Even so, as a fan of the series, I cant help but excited for this one, and today I am going to tell you why! Here are my top seven reasons I am scared of Resident Evil 7, but will buy it anyway because it excites me!

1. Return to the "Roots" -

Lately Resident Evil has been a series about action. Although 4 was still closer to its original horror survival style, Resident Evil 5 buffed up the main character Chris, had him go on an action packed shooting adventure, and gave him the ability to punch giant rocks with his fists. The game expanded on the systems created for RE4, added in a second playable character, and also introduced co-op to the main story. While not all may like the changes made in 5, it was still fun for what it was, and Resident Evil 6 turned up that action even further. It too was a really fun co-op experience (if you gave it a chance), and its story was very cinematic in nature. On top of that, theres also the more "arcady" modes of Resident Evil such as The Mercenaries, and Raid Mode. While Mercenaries is a game about killing enemies within a set time limit to gain the highest score, Raid mode is more of a shooter RPG mix about killing enemies, getting better weapons in loot drops, and unlocking new abilities. Both modes are pure action, and are great for co-op as well! But this isnt really what Resident Evil started as, and RE7 aims to fix that.

Rather than being an action game, Resident Evil 7 is locking us in an old creepy house filled with monsters, and asking us to survive. No longer can you run through the world guns blazing, but instead you have to progress with the fear of the unknown, and do whatever it takes to actually survive. Although games like Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2 brought some of these elements back to the series, RE7 is the first time they went full horror survival in quite some time, and this time it is actually true horror.

2. The Family -

"The Family" (which most likely isnt the same "family" mentioned in RE6) is a group of disturbing hillbillies that live in this old house youre locked in, and they are freakin crazy (to put it lightly)! Theres multiple members to this family, and each one is terrifying in their own way. The thing is though... These people arent your average deranged country hicks, but rather they are deranged country hicks that cannot die! From what weve seen so far, they are immortal (most likely due to the new virus going around), and they will stop at nothing to get you. Decide to set one on fire to get away? Yeah, good luck with that. Instead of burning to a crisp, theyll just keep coming at you as their flesh falls from their body and hits the ground... And THEN kill you. These people are not to be messed with, and often itll be better to run than to stand and fight. Of course that is easier said than done, as they can apparently crash through walls, and jump out from behind almost any corner to scare the heck out of you! Youll never know where they are, and they really will stop at nothing to get you. Theyre also completely crazy... Did I mention that? Seeing the "dad" saw through his sons arm with a knife just because he feels like it isnt something normal people do. Although, Im sure you knew that... I hope...

3. The Monsters -

Wouldnt be Resident Evil without monsters would it? Besides having to put up with the family, this house is loaded with who knows what! From the demo and trailers we have so far only seen one type of monster, but that doesnt mean there arent more out there to surprise us. As for the one type we have seen? They are no push overs. These things are bullet sponges, that will lunge at you, and kill you fast. The demo had you trying to outrun the thing, while using body bags to knock it over, but a few hits from it and you would be dead instead. The good news is, although it may not die normally, you can dismember it to prevent it from swinging its arms at you, or moving, so its not like they are completely invincible. Even so, these things are pure horror that could pop up at any moment, and if you run into one it may be best just to turn around and run away (and hopefully not into a member of the family instead).

4. Video Tapes -

Hidden throughout the house are old VHS tapes that can be played on any VCR you come across. While the main game has you play the role of a man searching for his wife, these VHS tapes take you to another moment in time, and put you in the shoes of someone else. Its pretty safe to assume that most of the other characters you play as wont get a happy ending, but their viewpoint will provide insight to what is actually going on. These sections of the game seem to be pure horror, and have no escape outside of finishing the tape. In some of the few weve seen so far, characters had to hide from members of the family as they hunted their pray (you), while in others they met their gruesome end instead. What we will all be seeing and doing in these tapes is mostly a secret for the time being, but they might be one of the freakiest parts of the game.

5. Using Real Meat -

Did you know Resident Evil 7 uses REAL meat? Yep, its true. This is a fact I might have been better off not knowing, but it does add to the realism of the game. Apparently RE7 uses a lot of 3D scans for actors faces and what not, but it was announced they also went a step further. Rather than just creating all of the monsters from scratch, the dev team paid a visit to a meat processing plant, and actually used REAL meat. Yes, thats right. They took real, dead, ground up animals, slapped the bloody mess onto models, and created our new enemies. So, when you think of the monsters I mentioned in number 3, also think of how "real" they actually are. (Needless to say, the real meat was used for more than just the monsters, so theres something else to not look forward to!)

6. First Person -

Resident Evil 7 is the first mainline RE game to use a first person point of view, and that alone really helps build up the fear. When playing games in third person, you can almost always see what is around your character, and it often gives you some kind of sense of security; however, when you limit that view to what is directly in front of you, then you never know what is lurking behind. Mixed with the shaky camera, darkened vision, and other graphical effects -- this view point really helps build the tension, making the sense of dread much worse. Sure third person games can be scary too, but first person opens a whole new world of jump scares, and more.

7. Virtual Reality -

As many may know, RE7 will be playable fully from start to finish in VR... And it is a nightmare! It may be hard for anyone who hasnt experienced VR to understand this, but VR really does mess with your brain. Although you know what youre seeing is fake, your brain relies on your senses of sight and sound to tell it what is real or not, and because of this it can be tricked. Playing a game like Resident Evil 7 in VR can easily put you into your "panic" mode, and make everything seem so much worse than it actually is. While you may be able to run through the entire game on a TV without getting scared even once, putting on a headset might cause you to stand in the first room unable to take your first virtual step forward. Its a truly strange experience, and even if you know what is to come, your brain cant help but tell you to "GET THE HECK OUT!" Resident Evil 7 looks to be freaky enough, but Resident Evil 7 in VR will be the ultimate test. I seriously dont think I can handle it, but Im still going to try.

Well there you have it! My top seven reasons why RE7 scares me, yet I still want to play it! Really, although each of these things freak me out, Im also excited to experience all of them for some strange reason. Again, Im not sure how far Ill actually get into this thing, but its worth a shot! This games release date cant get here soon enough...

A little of this a little of that

*

Games: Had a lot of things on my plate this weekend, so just a quick check in tonight  here are some brief impressions on what Ive been playing lately.

Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder - 3DS

I was absolutely stoked to see another Chibi-Robo title pop up out of nowhere. I had no idea it was coming, but I absolutely adore this little robot and another installment is more than welcome. His original title was hands-down one of the best things on the GameCube, and Ive always thought that Nintendo should have done more with him.

I havent put a lot of time into it (about 2 hours so far) but it seems solidly scaled-down. Chibi still goes around doing small household tasks to help people, but this time hes also trying to build a museum by taking photos of things.

This photo slant is kind of a cool idea because it uses the 3DS camera to insert Chibi into the photos for sort of an augmented reality effect. The problem is that the camera is incredibly finicky, and its quite difficult to use in certain situations. In rooms that are even slightly dark it often fails, and the game has templates of objects that you need to take pictures of, so finding something that is the exact correct size and shape to fit a template is really hard. for example, one template is obviously a t-shirt, but I did not own one that fit the dimensions perfectly. The game granted me a "its close enough, 60% match" pass, but still...

Im going to jump back into it tonight. It seems like a win so far, but I am definitely a fan of this series, and Im really hoping that the camera function wont be too much of a problem.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories - PS2

Ive had a copy of Shattered Memories in my backlog for a long, long time and I only just now got around to it after being nudged by several friends, Matt Kaplan and Scott Nichols primary among them.

I have to say, although I thought the idea of the game was pretty cool (its kind of a re-imagining of the original Silent Hill, my favorite in the series) it has a lot of problems and I got bored with it a little past the halfway point. Although I liked the removal of combat, that game was clearly designed for the Wii (its original platform) and as such, it really lacks a lot of depth since its obvious the developers were working with the Wii remote interface in mind.

The structure consists mostly of running a lot and using a virtual cursor to manipulate objects in the environment (which Im sure was absolutely riveting with a wiimote...) Its not very juicy. Worse, the story just didnt catch my attention. I never felt immersed or interested in what was going on, and it felt too long for what it was, even with a relatively short running time. I bailed maybe two thirds of the way through because it felt like a waste of time. After YouTubing the ending, Im glad I didnt stick around.

Assassins Creed: Liberation HD - 360

Speaking of boredom, I ponied up for a copy of AssCreed: LibHDagainst my better judgment. Im claiming temporary insanity.

Honestly, Im not a fan of the series at all, but I was intrigued by the idea of the main character being a mixed-race woman in slavery times, and how that would play into the story. Sadly,  I should have punched myself in the face rather than spending a dime on it. The story was scattered and felt like an afterthought, and the action was the same old AssCreed stuff that bored me three games ago.

I knew there was no hope when the main character was told to go buy a house. I thought property ownership would be an interesting story moment given her racial/gender status, but it was nothing more than walking up to a door and pushing B. I dont know why I thought the developers would actually do something with that, but I did Shame on me.

Anyway, I think I got halfway through the second chapter and just couldnt take it anymore. AssCreed has a few good ideas buried in it, but its mostly garbage and Im just done with it.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - 360

To end things on a high note, I dipped into my virtual backlog and started playing call CoJ: Gunslinger. Ive heard it come strongly recommended from people I respect, and they werent wrong.

Although the other Juarez games have been shaky at best and terrible at worst, the developers have really nailed this one. Its essentially a corridor-y arcade-y shooter at heart, but it looks sharp, the action is fast, and it has a lot of charm thanks to the narrator who has no problems changing his version of events at the drop of a hat. When he does, the level youre in will change accordingly.

In one instance he says he went into a mine through one shortcut, and the shortcut appears out of thin air. Once that proves to be a dead end, he says "No, thats not what happened" and the level shifts another way. Its a clever gimmick, the project is focused, and it doesnt try to be more than it is. Ive been playing a couple levels at a time and having a lot of fun, but Im glad its a small project and not something that goes on for 20 hours.

5 motivos para jogar WORLD OF WARCRAFT e 5 motivos para não jogar

especiais 5 motivos para jogar World of Warcraft e 5 motivos para no jogar

Porque voc deve jogar World of Warcraft

especiais 5 motivos para jogar World of Warcraft e 5 motivos para no jogar
Viu s? Pessoas bonitas tambm jogam WoW... NOT!

3 Disponibilidade no Brasil

especiais 5 motivos para jogar World of Warcraft e 5 motivos para no jogar
Opes de customizao no faltam em WoW.

Porque voc no deve jogar World of Warcraft

1 Alienao e Vcio

especiais 5 motivos para jogar World of Warcraft e 5 motivos para no jogar

especiais 5 motivos para jogar World of Warcraft e 5 motivos para no jogar

5G visionaries make a head start on the internet of things

There will be 50 billion everyday objects connected to the internet by 2020 Photo: (c) John Rensten
With the 5G mobile network set to launch in 2020, the UKs brightest minds are poised to drive innovation, championing new hardware and technologies that will transform the way we live.
By the time of 5Gs inception, it is estimated that there will be up to 100 billion internet-ready devices on the planet. So, while youll be glad to hear that internet speeds will dramatically increase, with the capability to download a movie in less than a second, this really is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what it will enable.
Anyone whos read a newspaper in the last six months will no doubt have come across the concept of the internet of things, this idea of machine-to-machine communication has the potential to completely overhaul the way we use technology. At present, the radio spectrum through which we communicate is extremely congested; 5G will increase the number of and broaden the available channels, allowing a larger number to operate simultaneously, with higher bandwidths, and with reliably lower-latency. And all of this with reduced power consumption.
This capability will allow large numbers of low-power inanimate objects equipped with sensors to talk to other internet-ready devices, reliably and without significant delay. For example, driverless cars will be brought to reality on a commercially useful scale, and will be able to receive driving instructions, and a steady stream of real-time data about traffic volumes and the movement of other vehicles. In this way, cars of the future will be able to calculate the safest, fastest route. These smart cars could also more effectively detect and report faults in the vehicle and, to save the owner time, book a service at the nearest garage and drive there independently.
One of the most exciting areas of application is healthcare. In effect, personal hardware devices which monitor information such as blood glucose and heart rate could transfer data about patients vital signs remotely, passing it to a doctor and alerting them if an individuals condition has worsened. This technology could help to increase the amount of out-patient care that can be delivered, thereby reducing the need for overnight hospital stays and freeing up beds. Furthermore, ambulances on the way to an emergency could access patient medical records and pull up real-time data on their current condition before arriving at the scene, allowing more immediately effective treatment.
Even though 5G has not yet been fully defined, the promise of a faster, more reliable network is mobilising engineers around the world. The combination of a lack of constraints and the promise of high monetary rewards available for those whose technologies take off, has acted as a catalyst in promoting further research and development. While there are opportunities for those developing hardware and the algorithms that will support the low power and reliability requirements of the internet of things, data security is another area which will need to be greatly advanced for the 5G network to thrive.
With more devices connected to the internet, and these devices collecting personal data such as medical information and location, security will be of central importance. Devices holding sensitive information are vulnerable to attack and it is likely that 5G capabilities will herald the creation of data vaults; Fort Knox-style storage facilities protected from cyber and physical attack.
It is vital that companies creating these new technologies obtain patents to protect their intellectual property at an early stage. Doing so will enable the sale and licensing of products which add functionality to, or are enabled by, the 5G network. Some businesses may choose to adopt a dual patent strategy, the first protecting their primary market which is not 5G related, and the second strategy protecting their more speculative innovation that could form part of the new 5G standard.
While the criteria for the standard is still unknown, the creation of the first truly global mobile network represents a huge opportunity for innovators. Taking action to create new technology now, and protecting that technology with patents could create new products and services for companies to sell, create jobs, and open up export markets. Whether or not all of these innovations are used by the 5G network, the current surge in research and development is going to be hugely beneficial for Britains technology industry.

A Heated Debate of Working Memory Components

Continue from last post.  Seemingly, DEsposito et al.s study is not very convincing.  A few years later, another group of researchers reported another fMRI data (Veltman, Rombots and Dolan, 2003), which were interpreted in a different view from DEsposito et als.

This time the data were collected using a block-design and two somehow similar but different tasks.  The first one is n-back (letter, instead of number) task.  The authors considered this one as a task testing "maintenance" component of WM plus "manipulation" component.  And the second task is Sternberg task, which involved only "maintenance" WM .  What is that? Sternberg?  According to the authors, its a task that presented a letter string, which could be any length between 2 to 7.  So maybe like this "tu", this "ruv", or this "rhkwifj".

The participants job was to memorise the presented string within 10 seconds.  They had 8 seconds to view the string and 2 second pause?.  I suppose that meant the participants viewed for 8 seconds following a 2-second blank screen.  Then what happened next? 15 single letters appeared on the screen, one after another one for 1 second.  Between subsequent letter was 2.5 second blank screen I suppose (2.5 SOA).  The goal for a participant was to recognise if the letter has ever appeared in the first presented letter string (answer Y/N by pressing two right-hand keys).  So I guess the participant needed to press one time for each individual letter.

This report mainly concerned the task effect, WM load x task interaction on the dependent measures, which includes fMRI measured signals, RT and Performance (# of item - # of error) / (# of item) x 100%

Take home message?  Their conclusion is more like an interpretation, instead of sticking closely with the data.  They concluded no anatomical segregation between WM "maintenance" and "manipulation" component, but function differences exits.  The function difference seems to rely on the readers willingness to accept that the two tasks test different things.  The reason was that because both task, contrast along the WM load, almost elicited very similar areas b dlPFC, l vlPFC, b parietal; contrast between task types and two different time period in Stenrberg task during encoding and responding, b dlPFC.  However, DEsposito et al.s study found very similar activation as well.  Their argument was the different signal strengths measured from dlPFC and vlPFC elicited by the two types of task.  The question is then why Veltman, Rombouts and Dolan did not examine the signal strength measured by the fMRI? They simply argued that two type of tasks elicited very similar activation regions, so no anatomical difference in terms of WM manipulation and WM maintenance. It seems that there were some problems there.  This may be about the methodology of fMRI study?

7 old Ancient Wonders of the World

These are the old seven ancient wonders of the world that come into consideration. The detail of all those wonders with their pictures are given below.

1. Great Pyramid of Giza:

The Great pyramid of Giza is the worlds largest and oldest Pyramid in Giza, Egypt. Its 756 feet long on each side and 450 feet high. The Ancient name of the Great Pyramid of Giza was Khufus Horizon. It took 20 years to build the whole pyramid. It is estimated that around 2,300,000 stone blocks were used in the construction of Great Pyramid that weight 2-30 tons each. There were three burial chambers inside the pyramid including bedrock underground chamber, the Queens Chamber and the Kings Chamber located from bottom to top respectively. It is the only pyramid that have built like that its four faces are slightly concave and no other pyramid has face like this one. The estimated weight of Pyramid is around 5,955,000 tons.

2. The Garden of Babylon:

The garden of Babylon was built around 600 B.C and located about 50 km south, on the east bank of Euphrates River, of Baghdad, Iraq. Nebuchadnezzar II built the Hanging Gardens for his wife, Queen Amytis. Its height is around 24 m (80 foot) and it made up with Mud bricks waterproofed with lead.

3. The Temple of Artemis:

The Temple of Artemis, also know as Artemesium, was constructed in the mid of 6th B.C and were located at Ephesus, now modern Turkey. This temple was built to honor the Greek Goddess Artemis. Temple were used as a house of worship and as a marketplace at different times. The temple were destroyed three times and then rebuilt and each time it become more larger and beautiful than previous. After the third time when temple were rebuilt, it was 60 feet high, 450 feet long and 225 feet wide. It had approximately 127 columns. It is consider that it is the first temple ever that were constructed with marble.

4. The Statue of Zeus:

The Statue of Zeus is constructed in the honor of greatest Greek God and the father of The Olympic games. The statue is 40 feet high. The statue was made up with wooden frame and covered in ivory and gold panels. The statue of Zeus were destroyed by fire in the 5th century.

5. The Mausoleum Tomb:

The Mausoleum was the tomb of Mausolus king, at the Ancient City of Halicarnassus. It is 140 feet high. In the front of the tomb, a staircase was built  that lead to the door of the mausoleum tomb. The stone lions were standing at the edge of the staircase.  Different artists contributed in the architects of tomb that was the combination of Greek, Egyptian and Lycian culture. Most part of the mausoleum was made up with white marble and surrounded by courtyard.

6. Colossus of Rhodes:

It is also called the Statue of Liberty. The statue is 120 feet high from foot to crown. It is made up with bronze plates attached to iron framework. Over this, they used brass plates to create the skin and outer structure of Helios. It stood on 50 foot high with white marble pedestal. It is built in harbor. It took 12 years to built the whole statue.

7. Lighthouse of Alexandria

It is located at Alexandria, Egypt. It is also known as Pharos of Alexandria. The lowest level of lighthouse was 100 feet square and 240 feet high. The second level had eight sides and 115 feet high and the third level was 60 feet high. On the top of this was a statue that was built in the honor of Poseidon, the God of the sea.
