A new look for 2017

When I started my blog my intention was for it to be the dynamic update content partner to my static core content pages on my website. Then some posts started to be linked from external sites so to simplify click-throughs I decided to maintain them. That in itself became cumbersome when highlighting what had changed for return viewers. Now there is a problem with new comments not displaying on one of the blog postings so Ive decided to reorganize and return to a multi-media format approach for sharing my work.

My website (www.linuxium.com.au) will contain the latest and complete documentation of my development work. All download links will be current and provide the most recent versions.

My blog (www.linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com) will highlight new development work which has been updated to my website. Additionally each blog posting has a comment facility where discussions can occur.

My social media G+ (https://plus.google.com/+IanMORRISON), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Linuxium) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/linuxium) accounts will be updated each time I post on my blog and serve both as notification media and for those wishing to subscribe for updates.

Comments including praise, criticism and suggestions are welcome on all media. Requests can be emailed and technical issues should be reported as comments on the relevant blog posting. The best way to help when reporting a technical issue is to include the name of your device and a copy of the output from dmesg (which is basically a log of kernel messages). The easiest way to share the log is by using the pastebinit command (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pastebinit). After installing the command by entering sudo apt install pastebinit you can share the kernel messages log by entering dmesg | pastebinit. This will paste a copy of the output from dmesg to Ubuntus Pastebin and provide an URL to access it. So when reporting a technical issue please include:
- Outline of issue
- Name of device
- URL from pastebin (e.g. http://paste.ubuntu.com/23646692)

Finally I am totally dependent on donations to continue my work so a donation link (http://goo.gl/nXWSGf) rather than adverts is included on all sites. Please use this to donate.

A New Beginning

As I reflect on the past year activities, I realize that one of the "most forgotten" thing was my blog. Well, it was not totally forgotten - its just that every time I decide to sit down and compose a new blog, something always comes up that require my immediate attention. So, alas, my blog suffered.

This year, however, I resolve (theres that word again :)) to do something about it. I resolve that instead of on giant article every time, I will post snippets on my thoughts on technology and how it affects my life. Thats my resolution for 2012.

Speaking of 2012, did the Mayan know something that we dont? Or is it because that their calendar just could not go beyond December 2012 that everyone thinks that is how much time we humans have left. Are we humans going out with a bang or just a whimper?

A new Pentaho Library on the community site

Recently I blogged about a new Ctools book available. At the time I was positively shocked about the huge amount of books on Pentaho out there.

So we thought that we might as well collect that information on the website itself for easy access. So here it is: http://community.pentaho.com/ctools/knowledge/library/

Youll be able to even browser the library by category to more easily get to what youre looking for.

A New Page

It was an offer that was too good to refuse, and so from the end of November, yours truly has once more taken a proper job.

Its week four here at the Social Justice unit at Dartington Trust , where I am now Web Systems Co-ordinator for Research in Practice and Research in Practice for Adults.

As soon as I work out what that job description means Ill let everyone know. Meanwhile...

The Social Justice programme at Dartington aims to build the capacity for equality and fairness, enabling everyone to meet their full potential and live an abundant life, as inspired by the Elmhirsts who established Dartington in 1925.

Today we are an independent, challenging and powerful voice, establishing enterprises which focus on leading social change. Operating a mix of inspiring independent activities, joint ventures and hosting collaborations, we strive to pursue the mission and objectives of the Social Justice programme and add value within our individual enterprises. This combined Social Justice programme allows us to have a total impact beyond the individual activity of each enterprise within it. Creative links with the Arts and Sustainability programmes at Dartington are also an important part of strengthening our work.

If you look at the RiP and RiPFA sites, the first is Old RiP which is currently being redeveloped by our partners at AB-uk whilst RiPFA has a new site for which another partner, BelieveIn  has delivered stage one. Both of these will deliver new pages during 2014. There is yet another site for Reason, the research, evaluation and analysis support network co-led by Research in Practice, Research in Practice for Adults and the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER).

In addition to developing these sites and managing the database of subscriptions, memberships, events and resources that sit behind them, there will be further micro-sites, e-commerce, and learning resources delivered over the coming year.

As I gradually swap the New Forest in Hampshire for the wilds of Dartmoor in Devon, it promises to be an interesting year. RC

9 must have apps for your new Android phone

1. Chrome Remote Desktop
Sometimes you need to access your computer while youre nowhere near it, but you have a phone! You just need to anticipate this eventuality before it comes up. There are plenty of options, but you should use Chrome Remote Desktop. As long as the Chrome service is running on your computer, Chrome Remote Desktop will be able to connect. The performance is surprisingly good, even over a cellular connection. Chrome Remote Desktop doesnt have as many features as some apps, but its free and extremely reliable.
Chrome Remote Desktop (free)

2. Pushbullet
Pushbullet is the best way to send (i.e. push) text, files, and links between your devices. That includes your desktop PC, a Chromebook, and even your verified friends devices. More than that, it also mirrors your notifications from Android to a desktop computer, allowing you to take action on them without even touching the phone. That includes something as simple as dismissing a new email popup or actually responding to an SMS from the Pushbullet desktop client.
Pushbullet also includes indispensable features like universal copy-and-paste, newsfeed-like Pushbullet channels, and remote file access. The basic functionality is free, but a $5 monthly or $40 yearly Pro upgrade is required for a few features like unlimited SMS replies and universal copy-and-paste.
Pushbullet (free)

3. Authy

Even with the most spectacularly secure password, you are not completely safe from account hacks. The best way to keep your accounts secure is to use two-factor authentication (2FA), and Google accounts play nice with 2FA. Well, kind of nice. Two-factor auth is a bit of a pain to use, but Authy makes it much easier. This app can act as an authenticator for any service that supports open 2FA systems.
You can register Authy with your mobile number, then use the app generates codes for services like Google, Dropbox, and many others (once 2FA is activated). Authy is a huge improvement over other 2FA apps because it can sync the encrypted authentication tokens across all your devices including phones, tablets, and computers. Set it up once, and youll always have your 2FA codes close at hand.
Authy (free)

4. Solid Explorer File Manager
Even with all of Androids sleek modern design and features, there are times when you need to dig into the file system. The built-in file managers that come with most phones are rather basic, so you should grab Solid Explorer. It has a dual-pane interface with support for local files and archives, but also cloud storage (Dropbox, Drive, etc.) and remote clients like FTP and WebDav. This app is updated frequently with new features as well. Solid Explorer comes with a free 14-day trial, after which it costs $1.99. Its well worth the price.
Solid Explorer File Manager (free trial, $1.99 upgrade)
5. Snapseed
That photo you snapped looks okay, but what if you want to crop it or add an artsy filter before you post it on your social network of choice? Most phones come with rudimentary image editing capabilities, but Snapseed is better at it. This app has a clean, touchscreen-friendly interface that makes it easy to tweak the saturation, brightness, and other basic photo qualities.
You can also crop, rotate, add text, and more. Many phones support RAW photo capture now, and Snapseed can open those files as well. That means your edits will be much more high-quality compared to reprocessing an already compressed normal JPEG file. Google has been updating Snapseed consistently and its still completely free.
Snapseed (free)
6. Backdrops
Every phone comes with a few stock wallpapers, but they usually stick to one or two different styles. If thats not your thing, youll have to go elsewhere. You should definitely grab Backdrops in that caseits the best wallpaper catalog available in app form.
It has hundreds of background images available, many of which are exclusively created for the app. The app is free to use if you dont mind ads, or you can upgrade to the full version to get rid of them and gain access to saving images offline and a few premium background collections.
Backdrops (free, $0.99 upgrade)
7. Focus
The stock gallery app on your phone cannot match the fantastic feature set and great design of Focus. This app displays your images in their folder locations like most gallery apps, but it also has a great tagging system to make it even easier to find important pics. Theres even fingerprint security to keep people from snooping in your photos.
Focus is completely free with a $2.99 in-app upgrade that adds a dark theme, custom tags, and a cool secure photo vault. Images you want to keep private can be locked away from prying eyes in the vault.
Focus (free, $2.99 in-app upgrade)
8. Weather Timeline
There are probably 100,000 weather apps on Android that put the conditions in widgets, your status bar, and even in the quick settings. Out of all those apps, Weather Timeline is the best. It doesnt get too fancy; its just a great weather app with handsome widgets.
As the name implies, the conditions are forecast are laid out in a timeline. That makes it easy to scroll through hourly and extended forecasts. If you want more info, Weather Timeline has data (and graphs) for precipitation, humidity, wind, and more. Theres also a time machine feature that lets you look at probable weather in the more distant future based on past patterns. Its absolutely worth the small up-front price.
Weather Timeline ($0.99)
9. Pocket Casts
Finding and managing podcasts on Android used to be an agonizing process, but Pocket Casts was one of the first apps to get it right. The developers have kept up with all the latest Android features, ensuring that it remains an essential app for any phone. Finding new podcasts is a snap with recommended feeds, Google Nearby sharing, and a search function. Signing up for an account also backs up all your podcast subscriptions so you can sync them to multiple devices. Your listening progress also syncs along with the subscriptions.

5 things to know about new IU coach Archie Miller

March Madness 360: Archie Miller hired as Indiana head coach

Indiana University has hired Archie Miller as its men"s basketball coach. Here are five things to know about Miller:

1. Coaching family

Miller"s brother, Sean, is the coach at Arizona and both played for their father, John Miller, at Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls, Pa. John Miller was 657-280 in a 35-year coaching career he retired in 2005 including 104-29 in the postseason. He won eight Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League championships, the second most in history, and four Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association titles.

Car rides home after practice, driving from camp to camp, said Archie of his father in a 2014 TribLive.com article. He"s really teaching you how to be a coach, and you don"t even realize it. He knew what hard work was. He knew what dedication was. He knew what preparation was. He knew how to communicate. It starts to come naturally to you. It"s all you do. It"s all you"re around, and it"s all you talk about.

Archie and Sean are one offour Division I head coaching brother combinations, joining the Drews (Scott, Baylor, and Bryce, Vanderbilt), Hurleys (Bobby, Arizona State, and Dan, Rhode Island), and Joneses (Joe, Boston University, and James, Yale).Archie and Sean Miller are the first brothers to coach different teams in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight in the same season (2014).

2. Disciplinarian

Dayton took strong disciplinary actions when players run afoul of the law under Miller.

Dayton dismissed junior forwards Devon Scott and Jalen Robinson in 2014. The decision was related to a series of thefts from residence halls on campus, according to the Dayton Daily News. The players were key figures in Dayton reaching the Elite Eight the previous season, but the Flyers went 25-8 without them.

Dayton suspended star Dyshawn Pierre for a semester during the 2015-16 season after a hearing board determined he violated the university"s policy on unwanted sexual contact, according to the Dayton Daily News. The decision was upheld by a federal judge, who ruled Pierre"s attorney failed to prove that Dayton"s process for determining Pierre"s guilt was biased or unfair. Prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to charge him with a crime but university policy had a lower standard of guilt. Pierre returned to the team at the end of his suspension.

3. No sibling rivalry

Sean and Archie are 10 years apart and Archie has said that led his brother to being more of a mentor than a rival.Sean, then an assistant, recruited Archie to North Carolina State as a point guard.Sean also hired Archie as an assistant at Arizona when we got the job in 2009. Archie was there for two seasons, helping with a 14-win turnaround, from 16-15 in 2009-10 to 30-8.

We didnt grow up in the house together two years apart and the backyard, Archie Miller told the Washington Post for a 2015 story. ... I basically look at him sort of as the role model, the guy whom to be like, the guy who to call when you need something, the one that helped you get to where you wanted to get to.

So its a much different relationship in that way. ...Hes a great reference. But no, were not that brotherly relationship thats like that. Were much different. Hes much more of a guy that I look for wisdom and knowledge from than anything else.

4. Meet Ryan Miller

Archie"s given name is Ryan but was called Archie at an early age because his personality was similar to Archie Bunker, thegrouchy TV character, according to the story on TribLive.com.

MORE:"No doubt" Archie Miller will make in-state recruiting a priority

I always felt that someone was looking at me and saying I"m not that good, not that big, he"s sean"s brother, miller told TribLive.com for a 2014 story.I felt that all the time growing up. I wasn"t as friendly. I didn"t go out of my way to make conversation. I always felt like I had a chip on my shoulder.

5. No leaks not a surprise

Much of the talk around the IU job had been focused on UCLA"s Steve Alford and Billy Donovan of the Oklahoma City Thunder. It shouldn"t be a surprise that Miller"s name didn"t surface until minutes before his hire was announced.

He kept his interview in Dayton a secret ... from his own father according to the Dayton Daily News.

My wife and I flew into Houston, and we were sitting there at a Starbucks in the airport about to head to the shuttle when I was like Holy Cow, theres Archie, John Miller said.He said hed take us to the hotel. On the way I said, Hey, what do you hear about the Dayton job? He said, I havent heard anything. I think thats a little above me maybe. He didnt give us a thing. I thought Dayton might be interested, but he didnt give us a clue. Then the next thing hes calling us and telling us hes flying up there to check out the job.

A new Tales game featuring a what! The lead Protagonist is a what! Tales of Berseria announcement

Namco-Bandai (Im sure you know the name if you know of the "Tales of" series,) has announced a new game during the "Tales of Festival" (livestream was available here) to be known as Tales of Berseria. Holy cow, just look at that logo. It seems to be a person standing with... whats either a long cape, or REALLY long flowing hair, scattering into the breeze....

Ah, a moment for our war-torn warrior, how many scars does he bare? How many tears has he -- ... what? This is what? His name is Velvet? And hes not a guy? ?(??)? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!

Welp, unless theres a new update. It seems that for the first time in Tales of history, the role of the star protagonist is going to be a female role. Her name is Velvet and she looks like quite the bonafide heroine already.

"I wont give up, no matter how many times it takes, Ill hold onto them."  *
Talking bout her dreams maybe? She seems like a strong girl with a life of pain awaiting her. ?(???)?

Shes voiced by Rina Satou, who has done the voice of Coral from Tales of Hearts, Vert/Lady Green Heart from Neptunia, Rixia Mao in Ao No Kiseki (I love those games~), Yuuki Kasokabe in ToHeart 2, Miasaka Mikoto from Railgun, and -- well the list goes on. To put it simple, shes got a number of experience in the profession. So Im sure shell do a good job.

Some more news on the game itself, it will be multi-platformed on both Sonys Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 consoles! So if youve played Tales of Graces F, Symphonia Chronicles, or the Xillia series, youll still be able to play it without having to buy a new console~ Wonderful.

Also; apparently they got UFOTABLE (famous for their beautiful animation of the Garden of Sinners / Kara no Kyoukai) to animate the cutscenes! So we can expect some Grade-A quality scenes.

Gameplay has not been announced yet! But you can bet your coin purse Ill stay updated on this game, since I loooove the Tales of RPG series~

This is Four, over and out.

P.S. Japanese Teaser website is apparently here. Theres nothing on it as of now, but we can all wait with much anticipation.

P.S.S. *This is my interpretation, my Japanese is garbage so I reviewed translations on a number of sites. If the exact translation comes available (or you know Japanese) please let me know.

A Brave New Record Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Review Reviewed on iOS also on Android

The Final Fantasy series has really made its way into the mobile gaming market. With a majority of the core Final Fantasy games available as paid apps on smartphones alongside free Final Fantasy apps such as Final Fantasy Record Keeper, theres an experience for Final Fantasy fans of all budgets and tastes, ranging from the old school JRPG Final Fantasy style to the more modern 3D style seen in recent Final Fantasy games. The Brave Frontier inspired Final Fantasy Brave Exvius take inspiration from the classic Final Fantasy games with its turn-based battle system, pixel art sprites and town exploration that will be familiar to fans of the series. But it isnt all classic Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius balances bringing a new Final Fantasy experience to the smartphone space featuring an interesting story with witty dialogue reminiscent of the classic games and also brings in the fun collection and turn-based systems featured in other mobile and core Final Fantasy series games of old and new.

As someone who was a longtime fan of Final Fantasy Record Keeper but needed something to hook me in to continue playing, the story in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a solid answer to this problem. Brave Exvius is set in the world of Grandshelt and explores the protagonists Rain and Lasswells journey in balancing Grandshelts powers of Lapis and Visions. This is the main premise anyway, as the pair seem to get sidetracked frequently, whether it be to save helpless citizens or, in true Final Fantasy style, to meet mysterious girls inside crystals. This kind of more lighthearted storytelling is great for the small story chapters in Brave Exvius as a game thatll live in most peoples pockets, so the witty banter between Rain and Lasswell males each chapter feel enjoyable in its under 5 minute length and is a nice way to progress through its saving the kingdom story.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius gets part of its name from Brave Frontier, another popular RPG game by developer A-Lim. But Final Fantasy Brave Exvius also places plenty of importance of the Final Fantasy part of its name, using plenty of mechanics, characters and aspects from Final Fantasy. As someone who hasnt played Brave Frontier, I still felt right at home with the familiar gameplay elements featured in Brave Exvius. The spells, Espers, limit breaks and explorable towns and dungeons are all very Final Fantasy-like and are a much needed upgrade to the basic character battle used in other Final Fantasy mobile games. Brave Exvius features a touch-based interface that utilises swipes to give a variety of different commands during battle. A swipe to the left will allow you to use skills, a swipe to the right will allow you to defend. This kind of smart use of the smartphones touch screen take advantage of the available screen space and allow for a battle system pretty close to the one seen in older Final Fantasy games. Add in Espers and Limit Breaks and battles are pretty exciting. While it does have an Auto function thats featured in most Final Fantasy mobile games, this kind of complexity encourages players to actually think out their moves and play like they would on a console Final Fantasy game or at least use the Repeat function to automatically use the same command you used before.

A really noteworthy thing in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is its inclusion of towns and exploration maps, something that I really enjoyed in Kingdom Hearts Unchained ? and was glad to see in Brave Exvius as well. Towns allow players to buy a variety of items at stores, including weapons, armour and healing items, along with recipes to craft all these things for those wanting to save gil and use materials in the neat crafting mechanic instead. Also in the towns are NPCs that give quests, an RPG feature that makes the world of Brave Exvius feel much more real and RPG-like than most smartphone RPGs Ive played. The quests given in towns usually lead to visiting an Exploration area, which features a maze-like map littered with monsters and treasure chests for players to hunt out items for quests, crafting and character upgrades. The exploration is generally simpler than whats found in console Final Fantasy games, but its still one of my favourite aspects of Brave Exvius because it makes it feel like a genuine JRPG world.

Along with finding items for quests and upgrades, theres plenty to unlock, collect and upgrade in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius whether youre into character collection or stat building. For those like myself who came from Final Fantasy Record Keeper, the character collection continues with Brave Exvius gacha system that uses Friend Points accumulated by making friends or having other players assist you in battle to summon extra units to battle with. These units include characters exclusive to Brave Exvius and also characters from old Final Fantasy games, which I was delighted by when I got a Vivi. For those looking to strengthen their battle units, characters can be Awakened (upgraded) up to a 5 star ranking, providing plenty of opportunity for more powerful characters and grinding. Grinding is made easy with Brave Exvius Vortex quests, which provide either materials, gil or experience depending on the type of dungeon the player chooses for each day. Whenever I was under-leveled for a quest, I really enjoyed how easy it is to find a way to get better units and upgrade my existing characters and found it really easy to understand as a JRPG player.

To accelerate unit collecting and upgrade material collection is Lapis, a material Grandshelt and also Brave Exvius in-game currency that can be bought with real world money. For those wanting to keep their experience free, there are plenty of opportunities to win Lapis in the game through quests and login bonuses and I never found myself to be out of them. A cool thing that Lapis can purchase are the weekly shopping packs released in Brave Exvius that offer materials that are more difficult to get. They also offer some of these packs for purchase with real money as well, but theyre never materials that are impossible to get just by playing the game.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is almost as dense as most Final Fantasy games, yet it fits perfectly on a smartphone due to smart mechanics and plenty of ways to collect and upgrade characters. With story, Espers and exploration, the experience features much of what Final Fantasy players enjoy on the console games in an easily accessible way for players on the go. As someone who was very into other Final Fantasy mobile games such as Final Fantasy Record Keeper, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius feels like a clear upgrade to the mobile Final Fantasy experience and Im glad I can finally enjoy the Final Fantasy battle system I love with enjoyable banter on days I leave my Vita at home.

Score: 9.5/10
Final Fantasys best mobile game yet manages to balance great story content, an explorable world and mechanics that fit smartphones perfectly in this on-the-go adventure.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is available in both the App Store and the Google Play store.

A new chapter begins for OGUK

????????

Welcome all readers, those returning & any visiting us for the first time, to our new site. Roughly a week ago now another milestone was passed here as the 2nd year of OGUK ended and our 3rd year began.
Ive been here since the very first day and it hasnt seemed like 2 years of work has flown past already, but maybe Im just getting old. Its about time things got spruced up a little around here though wouldnt you say? To be honest using Blogger has been good for the most part. Its allowed us to grow & become comfortable with reviews etc, as well as build a relationship with some publishers that fit into what we are about here, without having to worry about costs & overheads. To be honest with our readers though, some publishers do turn their noses up to that approach. Its why you may have noticed some games, even niche ones, we have either reviewed or posted content on late or not at all. This new site will act as a relaunch and a statement of intent. Itll give our readers something much more pleasant to look at, whilst boosting our setup to publishers which should allow us to bring you more timely news & reviews going forward.

Our resident indie guru, Des Mayer, found himself with some spare time not too long ago and started work on building our new home. Weve been double posting content during the past couple of weeks before going live so it isnt so barren here as we were looking to start afresh, but I am keeping our Blogger open in the coming days just in case theres a need for the older content (You may be able to find a link around here somewhere if you want to go back at any time) For the moment well be digging into our own pockets to fund the costs of running this site, so there wont be any intrusive ads etc for now. Some of the guys have been prodding me regarding ads for a while now, we are all just average joes who enjoy games when life & work allows, but Ive been holding off. I may have found a way to generate revenue without ads to keep the site self-sufficient in the future, so hopefully our readers will appreciate an ad free outlook for us! Theres still some tweaks to be done within the next few days or so (hopefully all will be ironed out before Des goes to EGX to get us some scoops!), the sites probably only about 90% done as new artwork needs to be finalised and theres still a few things we need to bring over from the old website. We also still have some more community based ideas well be looking in to, as well as competitions, tournaments etc - so theres still a few more announcements to come in the near future. If your interested in getting involved with writing anything here, then get in touch. We are always looking to recruit enthusiasts like ourselves and arent afraid to offer a chance to those that are keen but lack experience. Suggestions & ideas are always welcomed here from our readers too, so drop us an email or contact someone from the site via the various means at any time (well be getting all new email addresses for contacting the site & staff very soon, but our outlook (otakugamersuk@outlook.com) is still open just in case) We hope youll continue to visit as we grow our little corner of the internet

5 reasons 2016 will be the year of the new IT

Digital transformation is rewriting the rules of IT, and CIOs need to revamp their approaches if they want their companies to survive and thrive. Here are five predictions for what 2016 will bring under the new IT.

5 reasons 2016 will be the year of the new IT

Amit Pandey, CEO of cloud application delivery specialist Avi Networks, says 2016 will be the year of the "new IT." The confluence of cloud environments and applications, along with technologies like software-defined networking, are going to rewrite the rules for IT in 2016, he says.

The transformation has been underway for some time, but Pandey says that in 2016, CIOs and other tech leaders will have to revamp the way they approach IT if they want their companies to keep pace and remain competitive. Theyll need to purge legacy systems that hamper their agility and embrace digital transformation in the form of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence and other "third-platform technologies" (as research firm IDC calls them).

Here are Pandeys five "new IT" predictions for 2016.

1. Application owners will own IT
In 2016, DevOps and IT will become synonymous, Pandey says. CIOs will have to adopt an app-centric mindset or risk losing influence. That means application owners will be in the drivers seat when it comes to choosing the tools, techniques and skills theyll need. IT will have to get behind providing application owners with self-service capabilities.

"LOBs are now key influencers of IT strategy and demand a seamless user experience for their teams and customers," Pandey says. "Throw-over-the-wall provisioning of application services on traditional data center infrastructure will give way to application services (like security, load balancing and analytics) and closer to app development time. Sizeable IT investment and CIO mindshare will be applied to developer-friendly, software-driven choices and consumption base (as opposed to large capital equipment) platforms and services."

2. The data center will assume characteristics of the public cloud
The enterprise will achieve "public cloud-like" flexibility, agility and scale in the data center, Pandey says, while retaining a hybrid mix of data centers and public cloud.

"Low-cost computing infrastructure, seamless scaling of applications and easy integration into development practices have largely been confined to public cloud services like Amazon AWS," Pandey says. "A nexus of forces, including the maturing of OpenStack implementations, container tools/implementations (such as Mesosphere, Docker and CoreOS) and software-defined networking will lead to enterprises achieving cloud-like capabilities in-house."

3. Web-scale IT architectures will become available to most enterprises
The enterprise will no longer be confined to specialized hardware for data center services in 2016, Pandey predicts. The performance of new commodity x86 servers and the proliferation of elastic software-driven technologies will allow enterprises of all sizes to achieve a Web-scale IT architectural approach without the need for expensive, specialized hardware appliances.

"Enterprises will seek (and find) hardware agnostic approaches to architect their data centers," he says. "Historically, such an approach has been confined to very large cloud companies like Google, Amazon or Facebook. But with the performance characteristics now available in commodity x86 servers, the rise of the DevOps practices in enterprises and software-based application services, the architectural approach of the cloud giants will be available to most enterprises."

4. CIOs will face increased pressure to shift spending to operating expenses
Pandey says that IT budgets will tighten, leading to a slowdown in investment in traditional technologies. This, in turn, will lead CIOs to shift even more of their spend to a consumption-based model.

"The days of overspending on traditional tools and equipment that have proven only partially effective will end," he says. "As an example, Netflix has abandoned the use of traditional anti-virus tools. For data center tools, CIOs will be compelled by lines of business to shift IT spending choices from capital budgets to operating budgets. The need for uniformity of application architectures in multi-cloud environments will influence IT purchasing decisions (since traditional hardware-based technologies are not portable). IT leaders will be forced to address the problem of underutilization of capital equipment that apply only in one environment, especially in businesses that utilize cloud computing."

5. Cyberattacks and data breaches in the cloud go from perception to reality
While enterprises have been suspicious about the security of their data in cloud environments from the beginning, there hasnt been much in the way of actual cloud data breaches. But thats going to change in 2016, Pandey says.

"The international working group on cloud resiliency monitors downtimes and security risks in the cloud," Pandey says. "So far, no major security breaches or significant availability challenges have affected the cloud. Yet security challenges are often cited as a reason that enterprises are hesitant to move their computing to the cloud. So far, these security concerns have primarily been driven by perception with data center security breaches far exceeding any such events in the cloud. However, as more and more businesses adopt the cloud and a greater share of confidential data and apps are put in the cloud by users, security challenges (DDoS or other cyberattacks), data loss and potential outages can increase."

A New Adapted Back off Scheme for Broadcasting on IEEE 1609 4 Control Channel in VANET

This paper shows that the current works in the field of optimizing the contention window follow:

Propose a static minimum contention window for VANETs
Try to adjust the contention window in function of the vehicle density.

After all, the authors said that regardless of how the local density estimation is accurate, does not solve the problem because the local density cannot show the real data load.

Therefore, they propose two mechanisms:

1- They choose the starting time for each node in the CCH interval based on its geographical position
2- they propose a new back-off mechanism so that the node doesnt frozen its back-off timer by finding a new transmission and continue it until find it zero and then send the packet if find the channel free, otherwise, repeat the same routine.

These scheme shows better performance even if there are some GPS position errors.

Final point: this work distribute the nodes starting time based on their geographical position instead of choosing the optimized contention window. It can decrease the collision probability but it didnt find any answer for adapting the MAC based on the real data load.
